Beechwood Shopping Centre – Environmental Initiatives

At Beechwood we are committed to identifying and implementing ways to reduce our energy consumption, lower our carbon footprint and improve our environmental performance.

We achieve this in a number of ways and are constantly on the look out for further opportunities to improve our performance, either procedurally or by changes to systems and hardware. We consider any potential improvements and whilst not all initiatives can be implemented at the present time, those that are have produced genuine results. These include:

lighting-efficiency

power-items

Improving lighting efficiency and reducing energy consumption by replacing existing units with low energy LED alternatives.
Review and re-schedule small power items on-off times.
environmental-committee
contracted-cleaning-company
An onsite Environmental Committee which includes representatives from centre management, staff and tenants to identify, discuss and agree initiatives. Contracted cleaning company to follow environmental procedures including only using biodegradable cleaning products.

office-environment

electric-vehicle

Office environment utilizes environmental practices wherever possible including use of recycled products, recycling waste streaming and small item efficiencies. Electric vehicle charging points on car park currently being assessed for viability.

food-waste

increased-recycling

Food waste digester in process of being installed to remove food waste from general waste stream.

Increased recycling to include cardboard, paper, plastic, polythene, plastic coat hangers, polystyrene, used lamps and mixed recyclables. All general waste sent to MRF facility for further segregation and streaming.

Use of SMART meters and half hourly meter reading to ensure accurate billing and identify surges in use.

Use of photocells & timers to minimize unnecessary use.

If you visit our public toilets you will see we have installed low energy air blade style hand dryers – by only taking 12-15 seconds to dry your hands, these use 66% less electricity than conventional hand dryers.

By working alongside and in participation with our waste disposal partners and with the help, support and co-operation of our tenants in these and other initiatives, we have been able to improve our performance and demonstrate our commitment to working responsibly in order to further reduce our environmental impact now and into the future.
